Wow, Alex, I don’t know where to start. Living and working in Basel, I am proud of having another Masterpiece from the architects Herzog & De Meuron (Bird’s nest stadium in Beijing) in town. After all, they are based here. To see the whole construction development and the short time within the building rose was simply amazing.

What I am less proud of is the direction the fair is heading to. As a visitor, I expect to discover new trends, new brands, may-be the next big thing, but the fair’s tendency is more and more concentrating on the big groups. Usually, they are not the real trendsetters.

But back to the floor plans: In hall 1.0 they now logically grouped the big groups together and added the few major independent players. They probably had not much tactical room to maneuver there! This hall covers now 80% of the watch industry. Hall 1.1 offers already more variety. Wondering how Swarovski (luxury?) is exhibiting in an area which has no surface but is a giant hole in the building….

Not very logical to me is the attempt to bring a few jewelry brands into this hall and mix them with watch brands and at the same time introduce watches into Hall 2 which was traditionally dedicated to jewelry. The fair obviously puts brand perception and prestige over industry sector, which in point of view of the visitor is suboptimal.

What in the world happened to the Damiani group? In football terms, they are completely (and also literally) offside!

And for Eterna: Give Patrick Kury a call, you might be in for a surprise as far as I heard…

    Cheers!

    1. Thanks for your comments! Not everything seems to be logical here, but we will have to see… In hall 1.0 it is all about the big money… That´s life! The little ones we will have to find, but there are quite a few interesting brands to discover… so have fun. I have of course talked to Patrick Kury already, an interesting story …
