The new Radiomir 1940 3 Days also has the system for stopping the balance which operates in conjunction with the device for zeroing the seconds hand: when the winding crown is pulled out, the balance wheel stops and the seconds hand, rotating in the classic subsidiary dial at 9 o’clock, is moved back to zero, so that the watch can be synchronised exactly with the reference time signal.

The P.1000 calibrehas a diameter of just 26.8 mm (12 lignes) and a thickness of 3,85 mm, so it is perfectly suited to the proportions of the Radiomir 1940 case, which is 42 mm in diameter. The case is water-resistant to 10 bar (a depth of about 100 meters) in the polished AISI 316L stainless steel version and to 5 bar (about 50 meters) in the gold version. The latter is made of 5NPT red gold, the special gold alloy used by Panerai, which has a high percentage of copper, as well as a small amount of platinum which helps to prevent the precious metal oxidizing.

The Panerai Radiomir 1940 3 Days Automatic (PAM00620) is the first automatic watch in the Radiomir 1940 collection presented in the 42-mm size. Thanks to the Manufacture calibre P.4000, with its oscillating weight mounted off- centre and integrated in the movement, the thickness of the case is only 10.93 mm and, in spite of the substantially reduced size, the proportions of the case are consistent with those of vintage Panerai watches. The case of the new Radiomir 1940 3 Days Automatic is made from AISI 316L stainless steel, a metal particularly resistant to corrosion, and it is consistently water-resistant to 10 bar (a depth of about 100 metres). The dial of the new Radiomir 1940 is black and has all the classic characteristics of the Panerai dial: the sandwich structure, large bar hour markers and figures at the cardinal points, and the small seconds counter at 9 o’clock. Exceptional visibility at night is ensured by the use of the special “Grade A” Super-LumiNova, the luminous substance applied to the markers, which provide legibility for about 35% longer than the standard type.

Panerai’s most recent creation in the “Lo Scienziato” range is the new Radiomir 1940 Tourbillon GMT Oro Rosso – 48mm.  What immediately stands out is the sophisticated work of skeletonising the P. 2005/S movement, the hand-wound calibre with a tourbillon regulator which brings this superb timepiece to life.  The most fascinating attraction is undoubtedly the rotation of the tourbillon cage. The mechanism created by Officine Panerai is unusual in that a single rotation is completed in 30 seconds – instead of the traditional 60 – and it rotates on a perpendicular axis, instead of parallel to that of the balance wheel. This special construction compensates more effectively position errors caused by the force of gravity, thus ensuring more accurate time measurement. The P.2005/S movement also has the GMT function with a central hand indicating a second time zone, day/night indication on an auxiliary dial at three o/clock and the system for quickly setting local time. This is done by means of a star wheel with 12 teeth and a small friction spring, which enables the single hour hand to be adjusted in jumps, without interfering with the movement of the minute hands or the running of the watch.
