During Baselworld we’ve seen quite a few novelties in the shape of different colour variations to existing models. When we visited Longines they presented a new version of their iconic diver which has more to offer than just a different colour. Check out the Legend Diver Black.
Longines Legend Diver Black Watch
As the Heritage Collection has watches which come with a rich history, Longines came up with the idea to to revisit some of their iconic timepieces. One of our all time favourites is the Longines Legend Diver which is the reimagined version of the 1960’s diving watch. Staying true to the style and design elements typical of the era art was first designed in. With the 2018 Legend Diver in Black they came up with an improved version again. The new version with black PVD coating combines the vintage look with modern finishing and performance.
Although at first sight the new black version doesn’t look like a huge change over the existing models. When you find out the details you realise this is the improved version for sure. As mentioned before the Legend Diver has been one of our favourite dive watches for a long time. Especially the no-date version which sadly has been discontinued some years ago. We just keep on mentioning it hoping to find it back in the collection at some point.
Stealthy in black
Biggest visible change is the black PVD coating which looks great I must say. It give the watch a stealthy look which is extended in the new black rubber strap with Milanese style finish. The strap closes with a similar PVD coated folding clasp which comes with a diving extension as you can expect on a dive watch. Size wise nothing has changed and this watch also comes with the same glossy black lacquered dial as you will find on the previous Legend Diver models. Indexes, numerals and hands are filled with Super LumiNova for legibility in all conditions.
What gives this watch it’s particular look is the internal bidirectional diving bezel which is operated by the upper crown on the right side of the case. The lower crown at 4 o’clock operates the movement. Both crowns are of the screw-down type to guarantee water-resistance to 30 bar. But the biggest change is found under the dial as the movement has been upgraded to caliber L888. This movement is a modified ETA which has an improved power reserve and accuracy.
Overal Impression
As the Legend Diver already was one of our favourite watches, this new version makes it even more desirable. With a little price increase for the black finish and improved movement it’s great value for money. Something that you can expect from a brand like Longines who keep their watches affordable for most.
