This is what happens when petrolheads start to design watches: The “Scuderia Veloce” is the result of a collaboration between Blasta (manufacturer of automotive-design inspired high-end rings) and veterans from the Swiss watch industry. Blasta’s founders: “We are watchnuts as well, and we’ve always wanted to make one for ourselves. When we showed the first designs to some of our like-minded friends in the watch industry, they, too, wanted to have one.” The result:
The new brand Blasta Watch aims to make “the link between iconic automotive and contemporary watch design” and will offer a modular “carrozzeria” that can be exchanged with the supplied screwdriver (four cases are currently being offered).
The watch even has a case back that’s inspired by a car’s underbody:
The engine of the mechanical version is the ETA 2824-2, the Kickstarter campaign will be launched in October 2019, prices start at CHF 1,380.00 (CHF 820.00 for the quartz versions).
Verdict: fortunately, we were able to see and wear one of the prototypes briefly in Basel. While, at first, we were surprised by the rather unconventional design, the Scuderia Veloce’s unique 70s vibe soon started to have an effect on us as well. There are already so many watches with the same conservative design elements on the market, so it’s more than refreshing to see the unconventional result of an outsider’s approach to apply the rules of car design to a watch. And if you are scared of hitting your watch on a doorknob, the idea of an interchangeable “body” might just be the perfect thing for you…
