Watches&Wonders 2014 in Hong Kong: Interview with Philippe Léopold-Metzger, CEO Piaget

Philippe Léopold-Metzger, CEO Piaget

Piaget is the undisputed master of ultra-thin since 1957. These types of watches are very much appreciated in Asia, but not only there. Click on “read more” to get the story…

With a portfolio comprising 37 “in-house” movements – including 25 ultra-thin and 11 complicated calibres – for which it has earned 14 slenderness records, Piaget has been asserting itself since 1957 as the unrivalled master of ultra-thin. These extremely slender movements, honouring the brand’s determination to “always do better than necessary”, represent a peerless feat of miniaturisation perfectly fitted inside streamlined cases such as those of the iconic Altiplano collection. Even the “simplest” ultra-thin movement (hours/minutes) represents an outstanding accomplishment, and the major technical challenges involved in each stage of producing such a movement call for expertise and experience acquired over successive generations. It takes between two and four years to develop a new calibre, since the ultra-thin approach implies accommodating countless components within just a few millimetre-thin space, all the while guaranteeing long-term robustness and performance. A substantial technical accomplishment devoted to mastering the infinitely small.
