I already saw the watch in December and had my hands on.
Guys, the Oris Carl Brashear Limited Edition is based on Oris’s Divers Sixty-Five, a watch I also like very, very much.
The Carl Brashear Limited Edition is the first Oris watch to be made in bronze, a naturally aging material used in deep-sea diving helmets of the 1950s. As already mentioned above it takes its aesthetic from the Divers Sixty-Five, but at 42 mm in diameter.
Bronze is initially bright and shiny, and then darkens as its copper content reacts with carbon dioxide and moisture. So in contrary to other bronze watches this is a natural bronze and not a treated one that will never change its look. How boring is the latter!
The Oris diver will have its unique relationship with its owner! This means that each of the limited run of 2,000 pieces will develop a unique patina over time and start to look better and better …
Just in case you wish to stopp the patina to further develop and clean your Oris diver you can simply do this with the watch as you would clean “third teeth” (with e.g Kukident or something comparable)

Who was Carl Brashear?
Brashear joined the Navy in 1948 as a 17-year-old, and despite facing discrimination on account of his race. He graduated from the Navy’s diving programme in 1954. In 1966, he lost the lower part of his left leg in an accident during a mission to salvage a hydrogen bomb. After an exhausting period of rehabilitation, he became the U.S. Navy’s first amputee diver in 1968, and then qualified as a Master Diver in 1970, the first African American to do so. After a distinguished career in the U.S. Navy that lasted more than 30 years, Brashear retired in 1979. He died in 2006 aged 75.

The extraordinary story was the inspiration for the film Men of Honor in the year 2000, starring Robert De Niro, Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Charlize Theron.

The unidirectional rotating bezel is also made of bronze, with a raised minute scale for tracking dive times, a look that recalls a number of diver’s watches in the Oris archive. The stainless steel case back shows Brashear’s helmet and his very personal claim. Under the watch’s dark blue dial ticks an automatic mechanical movement, and the watch is water-resistant to 100 meters.

Thanks for all the nice comments on this watch! Why does it have a leather strap? Because this watch is a tribute to a man and his story from the 50ies and 60ies of the past century. Straps on boats and straps to fix the dive gear at the time were made of leather. We believe that this classic combination of materials evokes best the spirit of these times and of the great personality of Carl Brashear. It is not a sin to get knocked down, it is a sin to stay down – what a man.

36 or 38 would be great for people who appreciate vintage feeling and classy reasonnable sizes…
I’ve been waiting for a bronze watch like this, especially after wearing it for a while the patina on the watch will look great. Oris is on the move lately!!
I say 40mm was BIG for a vintage feeling watch. 42 is ridiculously big for a vintage.
Mr Oris, please make a smaller one, 36-38 … please …
I support you totally in this regard, as I do not like this modern trend of 40+ mm watches at all.
Most of the people do not have huge wrists, yet the watch companies keep on producing massive watches, I think it is ridiculous.
This looks like a fabulous watch and it is certainly worth buying.
But why is the case back in steel, couldn’t Oris do it in bronze?
Moreover, I am really surprised to see the leather strap in a diver’s watch.
Oris is coming out with very interesting Time pieces at very good price points. What I do not understand though is why they do a Diver’s watch with a leather strip?? Useless if you dive!

The dial design has a distinct Rolex touch. Which is not desirable for me. But with straight hands in red gold and the red gold indexes it’s got a nice vintage touch like the Tudor Black Bay One.
With the dark blue curved dial and the narrow bezel this bronze watch indeed looks elegant. The steel back makes it wearable since the bronze does not get in direct contact with your wrist and therefore does cause neither black dirt nor skin irritations.
It’s hard for me to find something to argue against in this watch.

I like bronze it is a beautiful material. Please accept the patina Mark. It is a handsome watch and the remembrance is apropos with diving, seafaring, Human rights and equality. I placed a plaque in bronze to honor my wife in her favorite kayaking estuary. As you know I am designing a watch and I will make it in bronze and 316L stainless steel.
I like it very much. Why the stainless steel back, though? Is it not possible to do the case back in bronze?
The copper content would stain your skin. And some people react the copper.

Gorgeous gorgeous watch! Love that dial but I’m not a huge fan of bronze watches as I’d be obsessively polishing it to keep it shiny 😉

No UK price yet available – sorry. Bronze, at least not treated bronze, will turn each watch into a unique piece … and if you wish to clean the bronze case do it with a cleanser for “third teeth” … no polishing is necessary afterwards … it will look like new … so you can restart the game with the patina again and again … 🙂
