Cool or not cool? Bamford Watch Department and Blaken changing the look of iconic models. How far should individualization go?

I see more and more individual designed Rolex. To black existing watch models out and to individualize them seems to be a growing business. Do the manufacturers miss a lucrative business? What do you think?

Is this a coincidence or just an ongoing development that I see more and more individual designed Rolex, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, Panerai, TAG Heuer, Omega and Breitling? People seem to have the wish to change the look of their precious watches. This is not cheap and this is a decision for life since you cannot undo these changes.

Look, I have just for fun online designed my personal Rolex Explorer II at the Bamford Watch Department. It´s just for fun and this watch does not reflect my taste, but shows what one could do…

These are other examples what Bamford Watch Department, Blaken do with successful watch models. By the way, at the Bamford Watch Department and at Blaken you can try to design your own watch.

Don´t be shy!

Try it and send me a screenshot of your individual watch. I´ll publish the best ones in the next days … 🙂

I wear a Rolex Gold Sub, which I dive with & wear with Black tie.I would never junk It up with cartoons or any other kind of design on It.It’s functional as a great dive watch & beautiful jewelery when I dress up to go out. It’s beautiful just as It Is.

Ultra-rich people love to customize their things and flaunt their wealth, just to prove that they are different from ordinary folks!

Everybody may spend his own money the way he likes. It costs a lot of money to look cheap. But the boys from the red light district will like these fugly watches.

I really like your Rolex Explorer II designs. I’d gladly shell out some major cash to have something like that on my wrist!

This is the trend nowadays I do not agree; only if Rolex would do the customization I would buy. The watch of Blaken looses on value. Actually some small Watch makers are doing it already for their rich clients take Bovet or Frank Villa for that matter.

Not cool, just silly. BTW I hope everybody realizes the fact that all this watches would be considered FAKE by Rolex, you will lose all the warranty on them and you will never get any service from Rolex on watches like these. That may be all cool with the first owner of the watch, but what about the used watch buyer? Would he realize what he is buying? Will this all be disclosed? From my experience – not always.

Some very rich people have been doing that for a very long time with their cars (Mansory anyone?).

I suppose that it is due to the fact that when you evolve in some social circles, “everyone” will wear the same watch and you may want to differentiate yourself with a custom style.

My comment is just an observation. If I had a lot of money, I would rather go to the Atelier Cabinotiers for a unique watch.

It’s kind of like sewing a tag into your underwear that has your name on it! Really??? You gotta have a watch with your name on it??? Why? Are you gonna forget who you are??? Seems quite silly to me!

Playing with the customiser is fun. Not that I would ever want to do it for real.

But I can see how some people would want to so they have a unique piece. I n that mode, it is sort of like customizing your car.

Not cool. It lessens the value dramatically. My steel and gold datejust has a brown face and twice when sent to Rolex NY for service they asked to replace it with a gold one and not the face that came with the watch. Allegedly faded but it’s the same shade as when I bought it new from an authorized Rolex dealer in the late 1980’s. It’ll be passed down and if my kid wants to sell it–originality matters.
